Making Product Placement Emotional

For the last hour or so I’ve been reading Martin Lindstrom’s “Buyology”. In his book, Lindstrom details his research into neuromarketing and how science can provide a better insight into our purchasing decisions.
Lindstrom explains that a lot of our purchasing decisions are made subconsciously and that when asked to explain why we purchase something our rational mind takes over and offers up, often weak, justifications for the purchase. In a television interview posted on his website he offers an example where a woman purchases a Louis Vuitton bag. She justifies this purchasing by referencing the bags superior styling and craftsmanship. Aided by a fMRI study, Lindstrom suggests that the purchase was motivated no by superior craftsmanship but by a desire to show the world here newly acquired wealth and by extension status in society. HMRC need to stick to what the do best…
Looking back over the last few years of HMRC television ads, one can hardly find anything remarkably about their bland television advertisements. Thus year, in the run up to the Self Assessment deadline (Jan 31st), HMRC have a commissioned two shinny new ads featuring Moira Stuart, let’s take a look…
Sometimes television can be amazing…
Sometimes television is amazing but it’s not always the programmes that are the most moving, most compelling or most enjoyed creations. Sometimes television advertising itself grabs us and takes us on a greater emotional journey.
I’ve selected a few advertisements that have really captured my attention. Every one of these advertisements establish a powerful emotional connection between myself and the brand advertised. More…
Back to College: Student Broadband

With universities and colleges around the country starting up teaching again for the 2008/09 session thousands of students nationwide will be moving into shinny new accommodation, most of which will be in the private sector.
One of the most important utilities for students besides electricity and gas will be high speed internet access. With an ever growing array of online study material and of course entertainment in the form of music and more recently streaming video such as BBC iPlayer, Sky Player, ITV’s offering and Demand Five, getting the right connection is more important.
If you are in college or university accommodation you’ll probably find that your internet is all ready provided but if you find yourself in your own accommodation or renting in the private sector you’ll probably have to sort it out yourself and in most areas you’ll three options, fixed-line broadband, cable broadband and mobile (sometimes known as 3G, cellular, HSDPA) broadband. Let’s check them out. More…
I Love my SlingBox
To be honest, I have no idea where I’d be without my SlingBox. Basically, you connect the SlingBox to your television (in this case, a Sky HD box) and Sling’ will sling the video across your LAN to your computer. Boo-ya!
But the fun does not stop there. Not only can you control your satellite/cable box from your computer but you can also pipe your television out of your LAN and onto the Internet for your viewing pleasure.
If only the “MTV Generation” still gave a sh*t…
Anyone watched MTV recently? Nope? Well don’t bother, its really went down hill. When I was young I used to love MTV and all those other music shows but to be honest the networks are mere prostitutes to advertisers and marketers. The shows used to be about music, now they are about inflating star’s egos and selling ring-tones.
Bring back the good old days, bring back music television like the “MTV Generation” would be remember. Or just shut up shop and think of a new way of exploiting the purchasing power of “Generation X/Y/Internet/whatever its called”.

Our Energy is Your Energy (again)
A few months ago I wrote about a television advertisement from Total Oil. The TV ad matched up two different shots showing energy production and then use in the home in a fancy split screen fashion.
Anyway, I love the music on the advertisement and have been having massive problems trying to track it down. This is my final call for information…
Consumer Electronic Devices for the Elderly
My father and I have been trying for some time now (around 20 minutes) to direct my grandmother to the power button on her new HD ready LCD flat screen television.
The power button is hidden on the leftmost edge of the television, behind is a component input. We have been unable to point this out to her.
But this made me think. How could the television have been designed better? Of course it could have had better placed and more tactile buttons but the television could have been networked.
Consider this, a range of electronic devices, such as PVR’s, DVD players, televisions – even microwaves for example all networked together and connected to the internet. I would be able to establish a connection with my grandmother’s house. I could invoke the device and command it remotely, i.e. turn the thing on.
Now, that’s all right if you have a family member who is computer literate enough to manage that. Let’s consider that you do not. The answer is to have a home monitoring system, just like you get for alarm systems. When you have a problem, you telephone up and the representative assists you.
It would take a lot of work but the networked home optimised for the aged could, one day, be a reality!
