Or maybe the staggered crossing is not broken.  You see it has a very clever safety feature…

To operate the crossing you must look in the direction of the oncoming traffic.

Even the central ‘sheep pen’ forces you to walk in the direction of the oncoming traffic for the lane that you are about to cross.

Therefore you will never look in the wrong direction and walk out into traffic.  Clever stuff!

I press a button, I wait, the lights change and I walk half way across the road.

When was the last time you wanted to cross only half the road?  Because that’s exactly the ‘problem’ this crossing appears to ‘solve’.
